PT locals take ‘Longest Day of Trails’ titles

It was a pair of hometown wins at the Longest Day of Trails 10K Summer Solstice Run last week, as 49-year-old Don Young took the overall title by edging women’s division winner Aubry Frantz, 31, a fellow Port Townsend resident, by 46 seconds.

Young finished the 10-kilometer course on the Larry Scott Memorial Trail in 39:11, Frantz in 39:57. Michael Casella-Blackburn, 55, was third with a 40:47 finish.

Organizers say the weather was anything but summer-like, which probably kept the registrations below what they expected.

Participants ranged in age from 10 years old to 74. All runners received a brightly colored pair of LDoT running socks and a redwood seedling. The first three finishers in each age/gender division received ribbons. A 15-mile bike ride was held in the afternoon as part of the celebration, covering the entire length of the trail finished to date, to the new Milo-Curry Road trailhead.

The Jefferson Trails Coalition and Pacific NW Trails Association thank participants, volunteers and sponsors. Sponsors for this year’s run included Jefferson Healthcare, Port Townsend Athletic Club, Port Townsend Food Co-Op, Metro Bagels, Evergreen Fitness, Good Sports Athletics, Port Hadlock QFC. CI Digital Media, The Broken Spoke Bike Shop and Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Department.

This was the fourth Longest Day of Trails event, a fundraiser for the trail organizations to promote, maintain and advocate for the continuation of the Larry Scott Trail.

The Jefferson Trails Coalition (Jefferson County chapter of the Peninsula Trails Coalition) seeks more members to help in their mission and for volunteers to help organize and run events such as the Longest Day of Trails. A membership application form can be found on the ODT website (www.OlympicDiscoveryTrail.com) or by calling Jeff Selby at 360-385-0995.

The Peninsula Trails Coalition is seeking new board members as well, particularly for representatives from Jefferson County.
