Registration opens for Sequim Sunshine Festival Sun Fun Color Run

The race in on — with a course open through the end of March.

Registration is now open for the Sequim Sunshine Festival Sun Fun Color Run, scheduled for a live event on Saturday, March 6, and a virtual “race” open between March 6-31.

This family friendly event begins and ends at Carrie Blake Community Park and has a 1K and a 5K option with color stations along the course.

The event will follow all state and county safety restrictions, city representatives noted last week.

That means participants need to wear masks at the starting and finishing areas, race director Victoria Jones said.

The 5K race is set for 9 to 11 a.m., with race organizers sending waves of 30 runners at a time. Participants in the 5K need to have a mask on for the first 100 yards, then can choose to lower their mask and will then need to mask up again entering the finish area, Jones said.

After a break in between races, the 1K starts up at 1 p.m.

“We’re going to have people stay masked (for the entirety of the 1K) just because it’s so short,” she said.

Like others of its kind, the Sun Fun Color Run sees race volunteers douse participants in certified non-toxic color power. Jones noted that many runners in a color run like to stay masked to help negotiate the powder.

Some runners may choose to avoid the live event during the pandemic, to the Sequim run has a “virtual” version where people can participate on their own time between race day and March 31.

“If people don’t feel comfortable, that’s why we have the virtual options,” Jones said.

“One of the (state health) regulations is, we have to offer virtual option (but) even if we weren’t required we’d still offer it anyway,” she said.

“I’m so excited we can do a portion of it in person. I think it’ll be a of fun.”

Registration is $30 for the 5k and $15 for the 1K through Jan. 31 (prices increase Feb. 1), and $30 for the virtual run. The fee includes a Sun Fun Color Run T-shirt, race bib, finisher medal, sunglasses, a neck gaiter face covering and a starting line color blast bag.
