Rowing: SYBC team competes, places at Poulsbo event

Six Sequim Bay Yacht Club rowers took home honors at the Kitsap Invitational Masters Summer Scrimmage hosted by the Poulsbo-based Kitsap Rowing Association on July 21.

Deana Volker of SBYC joined seven sweep rowers from other regional clubs in “Orange Crush” to take first place in the short-course (2.6 kilometers).

Swith rowers from other clubs, BYC’s Suzy Narbutovskih rowed sweep in the “Bill Richards,” the eight-person team that finished second in the 4.8-kilometer race — 23 seconds behind the winning “Thom.”

In the quad competition, the SBYC team of Carolyn DeSalvo, Frank DeSalvo, Amy Holms and Dennis Miller finished second behind a team from Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club of Port Townsend.

Other competing clubs included the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association (Port Angeles), Bainbridge Island Rowing, Clam Island Rowing (Silverdale), Vashon Island Rowing Club, Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club (Port Townsend) and the hosts.

Sequim Bay Yacht Club hosts rowers on Sept. 29 for the second rowing and paddling race that’s part of the yacht club’s annual Reach and Row for Hospice event that raises funds for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County (VHOCC).

Last year, more than 55 participated in the rowing and paddling race, helping the club raise more than $31,000 for VHOCC.
