Senior softball returns to Sequim ballfields

Time to break out and dust off those softball gloves.

The Sequim’s Senior Softball Grey Wolves are once again on local softball diamonds seeking all interested men and women ballplayers to join the fun.

The Grey Wolves are a co-ed league with age requirements of 50 plus for men and 45 plus for women. Players’ ages currently vary from the mid-50s into the high 70s.

Interested players from all over the area gather at Sequim’s Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., each Tuesday and Thursday, with warm-up at 8:30 a.m., batting practice at 9 a.m., and games beginning about 9:45-10 a.m.

The club promotes co-ed senior softball in the Sequim and Olympic Peninsula region. Members say the play “fosters good sportsmanship and provides positive social interactions among the players,” and that the top two rules are (1) “have fun” and (2) “play safe.”

The senior league has modified rules that emphasize limited contact to help ensure lower risk for injuries.

“We have people who have played all their lives or newcomers who haven’t picked up a bat in 40 or more years,” league president David Unruh said.

All players are encouraged to turn out. While some players leave the area during winter months, others turn out year-round when weather permits. Players include men and women of varying skill levels, members say.

The group plays both recreationally and competitively throughout the summer months.

For more information, contact Unruh at 425-367-2401 or Annette Hanson at 360-670-6774, or email to greywolves.senior.softball@gmail.com. Or, show up at the Carrie Blake Community Park ballfields behind the Guy Cole Events Center after 9 a.m. on a Tuesday or Thursday morning and watch the group play.

Registration for league play is underway; annual dues cost $25 or $30 with a league baseball cap included.
