Sequim AAU hoops squad takes state title

With a four-game sweep of their foes in Spokane in mid-March, Sequim’s fifth grade select AAU boys basketball squad has earned a spot in a national tournament.

The team led, by head coach Nikki Julmist and assistants Gary Abrams and Brent Schmadeke, earned wins over Newport (49-15), Cedarcrest (45-14) and Snohomish (58-49) before edging Woodinville 48-41 in overtime in their final game for the title.

The Sequim squad also picked up tourney wins in Portland, Ore., and Port Angeles this season.

The team is looking to play in their first national tourney the first week of July in Orlando, Fla. The team has set up a GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/y52z3-10000, asking the community for support to help with airfare, lodging, food and transportation costs.

Donations also can be mailed to: Sequim Youth Basketball, PO Box 3395, Sequim, WA 98382. Checks can be made out to the Sequim Youth Basketball; note in the memo line: “5th grade select basketball.”
