A group of 80-year-olds — who don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon — gathered for their annual meeting last week while celebrating new, seasoned riders.
The Society of Ancient and Honorable Cyclists met with other local riders on Sept. 1 to chat and commemorate the upcoming 80th birthday of fellow cyclist Bill O’Brien at his Dungeness home.
Cyclists within this group of about 15 range in age from 80 to 86, and ride each week starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from Sequim Community Church. Some riders also cycle at 9:30 a.m. Sundays starting at Voice of America Park.
O’Brien said some cyclists go upwards of 80 miles a week, and go about 20 miles each ride.
Cyclists said they enjoy the camaraderie, the experience of seeing the area more, and the ability to stay active.
Group members have been involved in the formation of the Spoke Folk and Women on Wheels (WOW) biking groups, and the Tour de Lavender.
Spoke Folk started in 2006 for all ages and boasts an email list of about 170 riders.
Women on Wheels, a sub-cycling group with about 70 women ages 55-80, started in 2008, and rides at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and Friday starting at Railroad Bridge Park.
