Sequim, PA gymnasts earn state meet berths

Area athletes are headed to the pinnacle of prep gymnastics competition this weekend after Port Angeles scored a team title and two Sequim athletes earned state-qualifying berths at the 2A/3A West Central District III meet at Auburn-Mountainview High School from Feb. 10-11.

The state meet is Feb. 16-18 at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma.

At districts, Sequim’s own Elizabeth Sweet and Lesae Pfeffer both qualified for the state tourney on the floor exercise; Sweet, a sophomore, scored 8.225 for ninth place, while Pfeffer, a freshman, scored 7.5 points.

Maya Wharton led the way for Port Angeles, scoring an individual title on the floor exercise with a 9.25, fourth place on the vault (8.10) and sixth on both bars (7.0) and beam (7.70). That earned her third place in all-round scoring. Teammate Nikaila Price was 10th in all-around points (29.295).

The Roughriders took first with 148.8 points. Timberline also qualified for state as a team after taking second place (139.85 points) at districts; Renton placed third and Highline was fourth.
