Sequim pair earn black belts

Joseph Hutchison and Joey Giammalva, both seniors at Sequim High School, achieved their black belts on June 2 at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center’s tae kwon do class.

The pair have been training in the martial arts since they were 8 years old.

During the test, they demonstrated their proficiency in the full range of tae kwon do kicking, striking and blocking techniques. They performed all the tae kwon do forms, a variety of controlled self-defense techniques, and sparred against multiple opponents at the same time.

Each also broke concrete patio blocks and pine boards to demonstrate their power and focus.

Hutchison plans to attend Southern Oregon University next year, majoring in psychology and art. He will wrestle in the Junior Nationals in July.

Giammalva plans to attend Olympic College to pursue a fire science degree.
