The Sequim U18 team saw a tough weekend at the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker Classic baseball tournament.

They placed fifth following a 1-3 record over the Fourth of July weekend.

Coach John Qualls, who took over for longtime coach Dan Perry, said it’s been a rough summer for the team.

“It’s a rebuilding year with a mix of a lot of younger and older guys,” Qualls said.

“We hope to get a lot of maturity and growth from these guys.”

Sequim opened the tournament in a shootout losing 15-11 to Kingston on the Fourth of July. The next day they were shutout by Seattle 6-0. On Saturday, they kept pace early but ultimately fell 10-1 to the Washington Nationals of Poulsbo, who allowed only two hits.

Sequim scored after Connor Bryant hit a double bringing in Nigel Christian, who singled and stole second and third bases.

Sequim earned its first win of the tournament by defeating Victoria Select, 4-3, behind Christian’s complete game. He also hit a double and triple, knocking in three runs.

The team consists of young men ages 14-19 mostly from Sequim with a few players from Port Angeles and Jefferson County.

Some of the players, Qualls said, have seen a lot of growth in their abilities this summer including Christian, Zach Rigg, Tyrus Beckett, Adam Schaefer and Colin Hallinan.

“So far it’s succeeding in that way,” Qualls said.

The team has more than a dozen games left through the end of the month.
