Sequim upends North Kitsap

With a full lineup, Sequim’s boys tennis squad can be a tough match-up for just about anyone.

Three Olympic League opponents found that out last week – including North Kitsap, a team that gave Sequim its first loss of the season earlier this fall – as Sequim improved its overall mark to 5-3.

Sequim hosted Olympic on Sept. 27 and swept the Trojans 7-0, getting three 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play from Mallory Maloney, Evan Hill and David Richards.

All four Sequim doubles duos earned straight set wins.

On Sept. 29 against North Kitsap’s Vikings, Sequim’s top players paired up in the doubles divisions and swept all four matches for a 4-3 league win.

Maloney and Byron Boots downed NK’s Sebastian Ford and Alex Olson, 6-4 and 6-2, while Waylon Lam and Michael Lee dropped NK’s Steven Breitmeyer and Shaun McBurney, 6-2 and 6-2.

Richards and Donovan Lee added a straight-set win in No. 3 doubles while Hill and Andrew Gunstone edged NK duo Riley McDonald and Nick Tedford, 7-5 and 7-5.

The Wolves capped the week with a 7-0 win against North Mason on Oct. 1.

Maloney stopped top Bulldog singles player Blake Eddy 6-0 and 6-0 while Richards and Duncan Skinner picked up singles wins.

The contest of the match came in No. 1 doubles play, as Lam and Michael Lee outlasted North Mason’s A.J. Barker and Cody Champine, 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2.

The Wolves were slated to host Kingston on Oct. 4 – results were unavailable at press time.

Sequim is at Port Townsend Oct. 6, hosts Bremerton Oct. 12 and is at Port Angeles on Oct. 13, the final regular season match. Sequim’s sub-district tournament is Oct. 21-22.
