Sequim Youth Basketball preps for 2011 season

The Sequim Youth Basketball Program is gearing up for its eighth year of operation.

The program is open to boys and girls in grades 1-6. Players receive a team shirt, weekly practice sessions (depending on gym availability) and seven or eight games.

Registration fees are $45 per player. A maximum of $100 per family is set. Some funds are available for families requiring financial assistance.

This season, league officials are doing registration by gender.

Registration/evaluation sessions

All players should plan to attend one of the registration/evaluation sessions indicated below.  At that time league officials register players and conduct a brief evaluation of each player to determine skill levels in an effort to divide teams as evenly as possible.

• 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, Sequim Middle School gym

Boys

• 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, Sequim Middle School gym

Late registration (boys and girls)

10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 26, Sequim Middle School gym

The season

League officials hope to have team rosters established and coaches assigned by Dec. 3. The league provides coaches with equipment, practice and game schedules as soon as possible. Games are on Saturdays starting at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day beginning Dec. 10.  The season ends by February.

Those interested in sponsoring a team, coaching, officiating, or volunteering in some other capacity may indicate areas of interest on registration forms.

League officials also hope to have Sequim High School varsity coaches conduct a parent meeting to address philosophy of the program and the expectations of players, parents, and coaches.  Officials plan to hold these meetings during the registration/evaluation sessions while high school players help with the evaluation process.

Coaches and assistant coaches this year are required under state law to attend a video training on management of concussions. During this session league officials also address program philosophy, pass out balls, and try to establish practice times/days.
