Sequim Youth Basketball readies for 2010 season

The Sequim Youth Basketball Program is gearing up for its seventh year of operation.

The program is open to boys and girls in grades 1-6. Players receive a team shirt, weekly practice sessions (depending on gym availability) and at least six games.

As in previous years, league officials do evaluations and establish team rosters following Thanksgiving and play games following the Christmas holiday break to provide a more even flow to the season.

Registration fees are $30 for players in grades 1-2, or $40 for players in grades 3-6. A maximum of $100 per family is set. Some funds are available for families requiring financial assistance.

Registration/evaluation sessions

All players should plan to attend one of the registration/evaluation sessions indicated below.  At that time league officials register players and conduct a brief evaluation of each player to determine skill levels in an effort to divide teams as evenly as possible.

Sessions generally take no longer than 20-30 minutes and players may come at any time during the sessions.

•  8:30-11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road

•  8:30-11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road

Those who cannot attend the Nov. 27 session and would like to register prior to the Dec. 4 session may mail a registration form and fee by Dec. 1st.

The season

League officials hope to have team rosters established and coaches assigned by Dec. 12. The league provides coaches with equipment, practice and game schedules as soon as possible.  Games are on Saturdays starting at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day beginning Jan. 8 .  The season ends by February.

Those interested in sponsoring a team, coaching, officiating, or volunteering in some other capacity may indicate areas of interest on registration forms.

New requirements

Coaches and assistant coaches this year are required under state law to attend a video training on management of concussions.  During this session league officials also address program philosophy, pass out balls, and try to establish practice times/days.

Larry Hill, Sequim Youth Basketball director, said officials are also planning a parent meeting to address philosophy of the program and the expectations of players, parents, and coaches. Parents will not be required to attend the games following the meeting, but they are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting.
