Sequim Youth Basketball sets 2012 preseason sessions

The Sequim Youth Basketball Program is gearing up for its ninth season.

The program is open to boys and girls in grades 1-6. Players receive a team shirt, weekly practice/skill development sessions and eight games.

This year, Sequim Youth Basketball is doing evaluation/registration sessions by gender in grades 3-6; registration for first- and second-graders is in group format, as in years past.

Cost is $45 per player, with a $100 family maximum. Financial assistance is available.

To register, complete a registration form and bring it to one of the registration/evaluation sessions listed below.

Those who cannot attend a session should mail a form and registration fee by Nov. 24 to: Sequim Youth Basketball, PO Box 3395, Sequim, WA, 98382.

Evaluations

All players should plan to attend one of the registration/evaluation sessions indicated below.

At that time, league officials will register players and conduct a brief evaluation of each participant to determine skill levels; players are divided among teams and officials hope to distribute talent as evenly as possible.

Evaluations include a combination of skill stations and a controlled scrimmage. Arrive at the times listed below; the registration/evaluation process may last about 90 minutes.

Each session starts with a 45-minute skills/rules clinic presented by the high school basketball coaches and players. Players in grades 3-6 follow that with scrimmages.

Sequim Youth Basketball officials hope to have the season wrapped up by the season by the third week in February.

Helping out

Those interested in sponsoring a team or coaching, officiating or volunteering in another capacity, contact league officials (listed below) or make note on a registration form.

Coaches and assistant coaches this year will be required under state law to attend a video training on management of concussions.

During this session, officials also will address program philosophy, pass out balls and try to establish practice times/days.

Sequim Youth basketball contacts are director Larry Hill (683-7093) and president Art Green (681-3252).
