The Olympic Peninsula’s soccer community celebrated stars of past and present with a pair of cross-peninsula match-ups on Sept. 1, with Sequim and Port Angeles each earning a victory at the annual Super Cup Soccer Derby.
Showcasing the best of Sequim and Port Angeles adult soccer players, the Port Angeles women topped Sequim 4-2 in the Super Cup’s first derby-style competition; last year’s game was a friendly with mixed rosters.
Victoria Jones scored a pair of first half goals while Maddie Boe and Taylar Clark chipped in scores for the victors. Vianey Cadenas had a penalty kick goal while Maeve Harris had a tally for Sequim, both coming in the second half.
On the men’s side, 2018 Sequim High grad Liam Harris had goals at 20 and 55 minutes, but Matt Wahto (63 minutes) and Migual Nogales (82) evened the score for Port Angeles, who managed to send the game into penalty kicks. There, as was the case in 2017, Sequim came out on top: Harris, Nic Baird, Teo Nuget, Pablo Salazar and Jordy Shearer each had penalty kick scores. Nogales, Josh Heckenlively and Jake Hughes each had PK scored for Port Angeles, but Sequim keeper Benito Morales came up with the Super Cup-winning save on a Killian Doherty attempt.
The winning town for each game is awarded proceeds to donate to a college-bound soccer player of their choosing. Two hometown high school students will be awarded during the Annual Scholarship Night in May.
In addition, the hometowns put up a pair of wagers between their respective city and chamber of commerce officials.
