Second hole in one

Dennis Mickelson of Mukilteo earned a rare feat last week, earning his second lifetime hole-in-one on the same course where he scored his first one. Using an 8-iron, Mickelson aced the 139-yard hole No. 11 at The Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim. Last year, he aced hole No. 17.

Don Robinson of Mukilteo and Bob Hammond and Dave Ingelsby of Sequim witnessed this year’s effort.

Free men’s basketball tourney on tap

A free Men’s Patriot Day, four-on-four outdoor Basketball Tournament will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, and 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Cornerstone Baptist Temple, 44 Joslin Road, Sequim, for ages 16 and older. Register by calling 681-3832 before Sept. 18.

Park closes upper, South Fork Hoh

Because of concerns for population health of Hoh River chinook salmon, Olympic National Park officials are closing the upper Hoh River, South Fork Hoh River and all tributaries to recreational fishing through Oct. 15.

This emergency closure is designed to maximize the protection of spawning chinook salmon, park officials said. The Hoh spring/summer chinook population has failed to meet the minimum escapement goal in six of the past seven years and remains at low levels of abundance.
