Mavy earns spot on all-district team
Former Sequim track and field standout Eve Mavy, now a student-athlete at the University of Redlands, earned a spot on the 2023-24 NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Academic All-District team, the school announced in June.
Mavy is majoring in violin performance and wants to teach and perform music after graduation, school officials noted. A competitor for the Bulldogs on the cross country and track squads, Mavy had personal bests in the 4.5k (18:14.8), 5k (19:11.1) and 6k (22:20.4) — with her 6k time is the eighth-fastest in Redland’s records books.
Mavy transferred to Sequim High in 2022 and qualified for the state 2A championship meet in two individual (800 and 1,600) and two relay events (4×200, 4×400). She was part of the SHS quartet that won the 4×400 state title and went on to take a title at the 2022 Nike Outdoor Nationals.
PA’s Wicked Racing wins
Locals did well in the weekend races as the Port Angeles team of Wicked Racing dominated the unlimited class at the American Sprint Boat Racing races at the Extreme Sports Park outside of Port Angeles in late July.
In the 400 class, which was won in an incredible close race by 20-year-old River Rogers and Rogers Racing of Lewiston, Idaho, Live Wire Racing of Port Angeles (Matt Denson and Vaughan Trapp) finished in the top five.
Dan Morrison won in the unlimited class on his home track in his Wicked Racing boat. He finished with a time of 44.754 with Sami Gustafson as his navigator. The other finalists, Rob Coley and Tanner Ward of Poison Ivy, based in New Zealand, were not able to finish in the finals.
The remaining top four boats in unlimited were Sequim’s Dillon Cummings and Mike McAneny of Jeepers Creepers and Eric Werner and Tina Huff of the Jolly Rogers 39M boat.
The sprint boats will return to the Extreme Sports Park Sept. 7-8.
