Paddlers to hear about B.C. kayak trek
The Olympic Peninsula Paddlers group hosts its general membership meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Solana Clubhouse, 135 Solana Parkway, with a quartet of members presenting “Paddling in the Broken Group.”
Consisting of more than 100 islands, the Broken Group, located off the coast of Vancouver Island near Ucluelet, is known for top kayaking. Natural features of this tranquil group of islands include lagoons, sandbars, blowholes, arches, and secluded anchorages, teaming with sea birds and ocean life.
Club members Susan Blenk, Keri French, Suz Hunter and Lee Olson will share their experiences during their recent week-long excursion based out of Broken Islands Lodge.
Each day, the paddlers encountered “stunning natural beauty as they ventured out, a variety of sea creatures ranging from whales to bat stars, and occasional challenges navigating around a confusing array of islands before returning to a relaxing, well-appointed lodge each evening,” event organizers said.
