Fastpitch earns eight all-league honors

Four Sequim Wolves fastpitch players were named to the all-Olympic League first team and another four to the all-league second team, as announced by coaches in late May. The eight selections were the most from a single team this spring.

First team SHS players include catcher Christy Grubb, infielders Addie Smith and Hannah Bates, and outfielder Lily Fili.

Named to the second team was pitcher Angel Wagner, infielder Taylee Rome and outfielders Katelyn Glass and Mia Pozernick.

Sammie Bacon was selected for the team’s sportsmanship award.

Zoe Smithson of Port Angeles was named the league’s MVP. The Roughriders had seven players named to the all-league team.

Sweet MVP, eight named to golf list

Led by state 2A runner-up Ben Sweet, eight Sequim High Wolves were named to the all-Olympic League golf squads for 2022.

Joining Sweet — the Olympic League’s MVP for 2022 — on the boys’ team are state qualifiers Dominic Riccobene and Cole Smithson, and district alternate Pryce Glasser.

On the all-league girls team are state qualifier Hannah Wagner and district qualifiers Jelissa Julmist, Juliana Tamblyn and Emily Post.

Sweet placed second at the state tourney and Riccobene placed 15th as the SHS boys took fifth as a team; Wagner was 24th.

Riccobene and Post were selected for Sequim’s sportsmanship honor.

Henninger, Wagner get postseason kudos

Sequim High seniors Aiden Henninger, a defender, and Brandon Wagner, a midfielder, were named to the boys’ soccer all-Olympic League first team, coaches announced in late May.

Henninger — who in January signed a letter of intent to play for Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, an NCAA Division III school — tallied four goals and led a defense that allowed an average of just 1.2 goals per game. Wagner, who signed on to play at Peninsula College this fall, was second on the team in both goals (nine) and assists (four).

Earning spots on the all-league second team was Sequim senior goalkeeper Jack Van De Wege, who posted six shutouts, and senior midfielder Brandon Charters, who had five goals and tied for a team high with five assists.

Van De Wege earned Sequim’s Sportsmanship Award for the spring.

Bremerton’s Jeremy Ford and Bainbridge Island’s John Roman were named league co-MVPs.

Port Angeles had two all-league selections: first team midfielder Dayton Williams and second team forward Xander Maestas.

SHS’s Bear earns all-league nod

Sequim High School senior Connor Bear was named to the all-Olympic League baseball first team as a utility player, following the spring 2022 season.

Bear led the Wolves in hits (17), batting average (.405) and RBIs (seven), and was second in on-base percentage. On the mound, Bear led the team in strikeouts (31) and was second in innings pitched (23 and 2/3) and earned-run average (4.14).

Jaxson Gray earned Sequim’s Sportsmanship Award for the season.

Port Angeles’ John Vaara (first team DH), Beckett Jarnagin (first team, outfielder), James Burkhardt (second team, outfielder), Colton Romero (second team, pitcher) and Kole Acker (second team, pitcher) were also named to the team.
