Barry picked for MVP
Sequim High senior Alex Barry was voted All-Peninsula Boys Basketball MVP by area coaches and Peninsula Daily News sports staff.
Barry, the Olympic League 2A MVP and honorable mention on The Associated Press’ Class 2A All-State team, averaged 20.3 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.7 steals, 3.3 assists and 2.5 blocks per game as Sequim finished 16-8 overall.
Teammate Vance Willis, also senior, was named to the All-Peninsula Boys Basketball team.
Avalanche to play in Seattle
The Olympic Avalanche, a select girls basketball squad with players from the Olympic Peninsula, take on the HD Dynamic of Yakima at Seattle’s Key Arena on Friday, July 10. Their game starts at 1 p.m. A $20 ticket gets you into the youth game plus the Seattle Storm vs. defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury (7 p.m. tipoff).

BMX track hosts free day
Come to the Port Angeles BMX track to celebrate the Olympic sport of bicycle moto racing. On June 20, the P.A. BMX track hosts a free Olympic Race Day. There is a new riders clinic “Sonic BMX Team coaching” from 2-3 p.m. and sign-ups for the race are 3-4 p.m., with racing starting soon afterward. Free one-day memberships are available for all past present and future riders. Medals are provided by Lincoln Street Coffee for this race.
The course also hosts a BMX camp coached by Chrissy Williams and Brotherrs BMX, set for noon-3 p.m., July 7-9; cost is $125 for all three days or $50 a day.

Port Scandalous derby squad rolls into Sequim
Port Scandalous Roller Derby’s third bout of the season is at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club unit at 400 W. Fir St. on Saturday, June 27.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the game starting at 6 p.m, with the Port Scandalous Strait Shooters taking on the Whidbey Island Rollergirls.
Presale tickets are $10 and are available at the Sequim Gazette office, 147 W. Washington St., and Drake’s U-Bake Pizza & Subs, 819 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.
Tickets are $12 at the door. Military and seniors receive a discount with ID and children younger than 6 are free. The event will features merchandise, a 50/50 raffle and concessions by the Boys & Girls Keystone Club.

Register for Klahhane gymnastic classes
Summer registration is open at Klahhane Gymnastics. Classes for ages 2-14 begin Monday, June 29, and continue through Aug. 20. Flexible weekly scheduling is available.
Classes are filling, so registration before classes start is suggested for best choice of class times. Tuition rates, class times and reservation forms are available at www.klahhanegymnastics.org; however, in-person registration at the gym is required.
Office hours for registration are 4-6 p.m., June 18-19 and June 24-25. After June 29, office hours are 3-6 p.m. Payment by check or cash only is due at the time of registration.
The gym is at 3318 E. Acorn Lane at the Walmart intersection west of the McCrorie Carpet Store in Port Angeles.
Yoga day at SARC
The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center announces its celebration of Yoga International Day from 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, June 19, which will feature yoga instructors Shelley Stratton and Julia Buggy. The event will be in the yoga/aerobics studio. This event is free and no reservations are required. Participants can elect to make donations to the Making Waves, children’s swim lesson scholarship.
