Wrestling clinic set
The third-annual Gene Mills Pin 2 Win Wrestling Camp will be hosted by the Sequim High School wrestling team July 5-8.
The camp will be held in Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Campers receive lunch each day and a Pin2Win camp T-shirt.

Skov places fourth at nationals
Mirek Skov, a 2023 Sequim High School graduate, who finished second in the pole vault at the state 2A track and field championships in May, came in fourth at the prestigious Nike Outdoor Championships held in Eugene, Ore., in mid-June.
Skov vaulted 13 feet, 6.5 inches, coming in fourth in the “emerging elite” category. He beat out 35 other top track and field athletes from as far away as Texas and Arkansas.
Skov vaulted 14-0 at the state championships in late May. His top vault of his senior season was 14-7 to win the District 2/3 championship. He took first at six meets this season and vaulted 13-6 or higher seven times.
Two other local athletes competed at the Nike Nationals. Eighth-grader Clare Turella of Sequim finished tied for 10th in the emerging elite girls high jump with a leap of 4-10½. Clarissa Sprague of Port Angeles finished 17th in the emerging elite girls hammer throw with a throw of 101-10.
Last year, Sequim High’s girls 4×400 relay team (Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Eve Mavy and Riley Pyeatt) took first at the Nike Nationals, a few weeks after winning the 2A state championship.
Live Wire competes
The Live Wire sprint boat, based in Sequim, competed recently at Webb’s Slough outside of St. John, in Whitman County, on June 17.
Live Wire made it to the final eight in both the 800 and unlimited classes of the jet sprint boat races.
Sprint boat racing returns to the Extreme Sports Park west of Port Angeles on July 29-30 and Sept. 9-10.
Free football workout set
Youth football coach Sam Salanoa will host his second annual free youth football camp from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, June 30, at the Albert Haller Playfields, 506 N. Blake Ave.
The camp for is for youth of ages 6-14. There will be no pads involved. They should just wear a T-shirt, shorts and some cleats.
Players should also bring their own water. Pizza and ice cream will be provided after the camp.
Salanoa is a Port Angeles High School assistant and a longtime Sequim Wolf Pack coach.
Bodystrong competes at taekwondo tourney
Sequim’s Bodystrong Taekwon-do Academy had 15 students enter the competition and all but one returned with a medal at the 2023 Pacific Northwest Taekwon-do Tournament in La Center on May 20.
Bodystrong’s Annabelle Vadnais, 12, earned the Junior Grand champion award thanks to her high scores in all three individual events.
Bodystrong black belt competitors included Adrian, Aron and Jessica Golbeck, and Linda Allen. Adult color belt competitors from Bodystrong included Carter and Christian Fenner, Alysa L’ami, Annabelle Vadnais , and Anderson and Jenifer Williams. Bodystrong’s junior class color belts included Kazuki Feinstein, North Hogland, Emily and Hunter Pedrey, and Sidney Williams.
County shuts down East Strait to shellfish harvesting
The East Strait of Juan de Fuca — from Lyre River/Low Point to the Jefferson County line, including Dungeness Bay — closed on June 22 and remains closed for recreational harvest of all species of shellfish, according to the Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health Division.
Sequim Bay is closed to butter and varnish clams only while the western Strait of Juan de Fuca, from Cape Flattery to Lyre River/Low Point, remains open.
Closed to all species means clams (including geoduck), oysters, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail. All areas are closed for the sport harvest of scallops. These closures do not apply to shrimp.
