Women’s basketball league forming in PA

The Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Department hosts a spring women’s basketball league open to women/girls ages 16 and older. Games are held at Roosevelt Elementary School and the Vern Burton Community Center.

Cost is $400 per team. The registration deadline is March 22. Players without a team can register and are put on a “free agent”list.

Cedars at Dungeness a Senior Open qualifier

The United States Golf Association announced last week sectional qualifying sites for the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be held at The Broadmoor Golf Club’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28-July 1.

The Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim hosts a qualifier on Monday, June 11.

Conducted over 18 holes, sectional qualifying will be held at 34 sites across the United States between May 21-June 11. Online entry applications are available now and continue through Wednesday, May 16, at 5 p.m. EDT (www.usga.org/champs/apply).

There are qualifying sites in 26 states.

Youth athletic camp during spring break

The Peninsula College Pirates host the Pirate Athletic Youth Camp from 12:30-3:30 p.m., April 2 – 6, in the Peninsula College gymnasium, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The program aims to create a “safe and fun learning environment that will teach kids good habits both on the and off the basketball court.”

Athletes will focus on ball handling, passing, shooting, defense and other basketball concepts.

The program is open to all boys and girls in the community ages 7-16 who have an interest in basketball and a desire to work with college coaches and athletes to improve their game.

Participants must bring gym shoes, a water bottle and a basketball to each practice.

Soccer academy set

Registration for the Peninsula Soccer Academy is underway at www.paysc.com through March 31.

The spring soccer program for U6-U17 players is presented by Port Angeles Youth Soccer Club and Peninsula College. It is designed for players interested in enhancing their soccer skills and knowledge in a non-competitive environment.

Coaching is conducted by Peninsula College soccer coaches and players, with all sessions at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Sessions for U6 and U7 players will be held from 5:45-6:30 p.m. each Tuesday from April 17-May 22. Cost is $45 for U6 and U7 players.

Practices for U8-U11 athletes will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from April 9-May 31.

And U12-U17 players will train from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 9-May 31.

Cost is $70 for U8 through U17 players.
