Equestrians finish season strong at state

The Sequim Equestrian Team saw five top-15 finishes at the Washington High School Equestrian Team state meet, held May 11-14 at Grant County Fairgrounds in Moses Lake.

Sequim High seniors Sydney Balkan and Amy Tucker teamed up to win gold in Cattle Sorting.

Grace Niemeyer placed fourth in Jumping while Lilly Thompson placed seventh in In-Hand Trail. Sequim’s Working Fours Drill Team (Balkan, Tucker, Emelie Fürste and Miranda Williams) took 12th while Balkan placed 15th in Individual Flags.

“Our girls did great,” Sequim coach Katie Salmon-Newton said. “Be proud of our great athletes!”

The top five placings at state move on to the Oregon-Washington Pacific Northwest Invitational Championship set for June 2-4 in Redmond, Ore.

Local angler group hosts WDFW officials

The next monthly meeting of Puget Sound Anglers set for Thursday, May 18, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., features biologists Lorna Wargo, Rob Davis and Kristen Hinton from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Their topic is “Identifying and Protecting Washington’s Rockfish,” providing to anglers tips for honing rockfish species identification skills, as well as some rockfish biology in process and a brief update on population status.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. for viewing the raffle prizes and fish stories. A short club business meeting begins at 7 p.m.; the guest speakers follow.

Tennis academy, tournament scheduled

Sign-ups are underway for the Community Junior Tennis Program’s third-annual tennis academy, followed by an open tennis tournament, for area junior players.

The academy is at the Sequim High School tennis courts from 9 a.m.-noon, July 10-14. Players ages 6-18 with some playing experience are invited to attend. The one-week academy session will be limited to about 30 determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants may register by emailing Masterdgt@aol.com and providing name, age and playing experience level.

The Sequim’s open juniors tennis tournament for boys and girls is set for July 24-28. Entries close at noon Friday, July 21, and can be made by emailing Masterdgt@aol.com.

Charges for the academy and the tournament are not anticipated. T-shirts, snacks, and water will be provided for the participants. For more information, call Don Thomas at 461-0351.

Klahhane Gymnastics opens registration

Registration for classes at Klahhane Gymnastics (3318 E. Acorn Lane, Port Angeles) opens Monday, May 22. Afternoon and evening classes for pre-school through high school afternoon are offered Monday-Thursday starting June 26, and continue through Aug. 17. The schedule of classes and times is available at Klahhane Gymnastics; schedule and printable registration forms will be available on the website after May 22.
