PA youth hoops tourney has openings

The Warehouse Holiday Hoops youth basketball tournament, set for Dec. 8-9 in Port Angeles, still has openings in some divisions.

The tourney features divisions for boys and girls teams in grades 4-8. There is a $250 entry fee and four-game guarantee. For more information or to register, call Dan Estes at 360-417-4557 or email to destes@cityofpa.us.

Free boating clinic offered

The North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron offers a free boating clinic, “Effective Communications Onboard” from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 1, at the “Gathering Place” at Sunland Golf and Country Club, 135 Fairway Dr.

Squadron instructor Nila Madsen leads the clinic; the public is encouraged and welcome to attend. Whether boating alone, with a mate or with a crew, effective communication is as important to the safety of one’s boat and those onboard as the electronics onboard, squadron representatives say. The presentation addresses communication between captain and crew, examples of what works and what doesn’t, radio communications and how to improve communications in general.

Haggerty named to tourney first team

Sequim High graduate Adrienne Haggerty was named to the NWAC All-Tournament First Team after leading her Highline Thunderbirds to the NWAC volleyball title game on Nov. 18.

Haggerty, a 2017 SHS graduate, had nine kills in Highline’s finale that saw Spokane win in three games to go a perfect 40-0.

In seven tourney matches, Haggerty had 72 kills, 17 aces and 32 digs.

“We always have a game plan that’s pretty in depth, but our number one goal was to stop (Haggerty) and (Alicia Nguyen) on the outside,” Spokane head coach Jenni Hull said.
