Sports recap: Wolves sweep Knights to finish regular season

Brewer qualifies for state, four to districts for girls, boys golf

Updated with new information May 6.

Here’s a recap of Sequim High School’s prep sports from last week as many teams wind down their seasons or ready for league and state events. See more photos at sequimgazette.com.

Tennis

Under blustery conditions, the Wolves girls tennis team finished their regular season at home on May 2 with a sweep of Bremerton 7-0.

While they had to pause at times due to gusts of wind, singles players Tiffany Lam, Calleigh Thompson and Amara Gonzalez all won, along with doubles pairs Sydney Thomas-Harris and Kendall Day, Kristina Prorok and Sasha Yada, Keira Morey and Abby Brown, and Lily Sparks and Sophia Greenleaf.

For the week, Sequim went 3-1 with Olympic League coaches set to meet on May 5 after the Gazette’s press deadline to determine the match-ups for the Olympic League Meet on May 9-10 at North Kitsap High School.

Sequim coaches said the Wolves will send at least two singles players and two double teams based on their season record.

On May 6, coaches announced that

Lam, Thompson and Gonzalez will represent Sequim as singles players, while Thomas-Harris and Day, and Prorok and Yada will play as doubles at the League Meet.

At Port Angeles on May 1, the Wolves won six of seven match-ups with Lam winning 6-1, 6-1 over Emma Murray, Thompson 6-0, 6-0 over Pyper Alton, and Gonzalez 6-0, 6-1 over Julie Getzin.

In doubles, Yada and Peyton Smith, Morey and Brown and Sparks and Greenleaf won.

The Roughriders’ Cayleigh Alward and Abby Riffle won Port Angeles’ lone match 7-6, 7-5 over Sequim’s Thomas-Harris and Prorok.

The Wolves also won six matches at home against the Olympic Trojans on April 29.

Lam won 6-2, 7-5 over Annabelle Waldman, Gonzalez 6-7, 6-0, 6-3 over Chelsea Barber, and Thompson 6-0, 6-1 over Lola Ramirez.

Morey and Brown, and Sparks and Greenleaf won their matches in three sets.

To open the week on April 28 in North Kitsap, the Wolves won one match-up with Thompson winning 6-1, 6-1 as the No. 3 singles player.

Golf

On April 28, Sequim’s golf teams competed at the Olympic League championships at the Kitsap Golf Club.

Sequim’s Adrian Aragorn qualified for the district meet with a ninth-place score of 88, while teammate Levi Breithaupt will be an alternate. The district meet will be at Allenmore Golf Club in Tacoma on May 13.

The top seven golfers at league qualify for the state tournament, while the next 11 qualify for the district meet.

For the girls, Raimey Brewer finished sixth with a 98 and will go directly to state while three teammates qualified for the district tourney, also set for Allenmore. Sara German finished 12th and Chloe Tweter 13th, each with 107s, and Kendra Dodson was 14th with a 109. Kaiya Robinson will serve as an alternate.

The girls state tournament is set for May 20-21 in Tumwater.

Soccer

The Sequim soccer team got a crucial shutout victory to remain in the Olympic League playoff hunt, beating Rainshadow Rumble rival Port Angeles 1-0 on Friday.

Goalkeeper Nolan Valenzuela earned the shutout for the Wolves, making a number of big saves to preserve the shutout.

Port Angeles remains in third place in the Olympic League with a record of 7-5. The win gave the Wolves a record of 6-7 in league, vaulting past North Mason, which lost 7-0 Friday night to North Kitsap to drop to 5-8 in league.

The schedule is favorable for both Sequim and Port Angeles in the final week of league.

Port Angeles, 9-6 overall, has two games left, both at home and both against teams in the bottom half of the standings — Olympic and Bremerton.

Sequim has a very tough home game left at home against North Kitsap (11-2, 12-3) on May 6 after the press deadline. But, fortunately for Sequim, North Mason is playing at unbeaten league champion Bainbridge (13-0, 15-0) on Tuesday, so it appears that the Wolves don’t have to win Tuesday’s game to remain all alone in fourth place.

Port Angeles and Sequim will learn their playoff seeding Thursday.

Moments after Port Angeles’ Matthew Miller had a golden opportunity on a blistering shot from close range that Valenzuela was in perfect position for, Sequim finally broke the 0-0 tie in the 59th minute when the Port Angeles defense made a bad clear to Sequim’s Evan Cisneros.

Cisneros ended up all alone unmarked with the ball just outside the box and calmly kicked the ball to the top of the net past Gus Halberg’s outstretched hands.

Miller had another great chance with a perfect, slicing shot from 17 to 18 yards out late in the second half, but Valenzuela dove to his left and tipped the ball with his outstretched hand. He caught just enough of the ball that it went off the crossbar and stayed out.

The Riders beat the Wolves 2-1 in the first match-up of the season.

Earlier in the week, the Wolves lost 1-0 to the Olympic Trojans.

Olympic found the net on a Sequim own goal when a Trojans’ corner kick turned into a scramble inside the goal box in the first overtime period.

“Valenzuela was in the process of reaching for the save and our defender deflected it with his hand to go in. It was a tough one to swallow,” said coach Dave Breckenridge.

“We had our opportunity with a penalty kick that Max Stanford created by beating the back line into the box where he was taken down. Preston Kurtze stepped up to take and unfortunately missed. We had other opportunities but just couldn’t finish.”

Baseball

The Wolves baseball team (5-7, 6-12) went 2-1 last week, including a non-league victory over Forks on May 1.

Sequim and Forks combined for 34 base hits in the Wolves’ 15-9 win at Fred Orr Memorial Field.

Sequim’s Hunter Tennell and Devyn Dearinger each had four hits, and Zeke Schamdeke, Ethan Staples and Clay Abrams all had multi-hit games, too.

Tennell had three RBIs and Staples hit a triple.

In an April 30 away game win over North Kitsap, Sequim rallied to knock off the Vikings 7-4 in eight innings.

With the game tied at 4-all in the eighth inning, Abrams reached on a one-out base hit, advanced on Schmadeke’s walk and when Tennell was hit by a pitch and came home on Braydan White’s infield single for the eventual game-winning run.

Staples added an RBI single and White came home on a wild pitch to put Sequim up 7-4.

White struck out the side for Sequim to close out the win.

RBI singles by Staples and Dearinger in the seventh inning tied the game up at 4-all.

The day prior, Sequim lost at home 14-0 to the Vikings.

Sequim was set to travel to Bremerton on Tuesday and then host the Knights on Wednesday to finish the regular season. As of Monday, May 5, the Wolves were in a three-way tie for fourth place.

Fastpitch

The Sequim softball team Sequim (2-8, 3-10) had its biggest offensive output of the year, pounding out 18 hits in a 20-10 win over Bainbridge on April 28.

The Wolves blew open a 6-6 game with a 13-run fourth inning as 17 batters came to the plate.

Several Wolves had big games, led by Mia Kirner, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and seven RBIs.

Kylie Winter was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, while Hannah Giddings was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Mikki Green was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Rilynn Whitehead was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Manuela Valle was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Ava Ritter had a double, while Grace Gardner had a double and two RBIs.

Later in the week, the Wolves lost 12-0 at home to second place Olympic.

They’re set to host Olympic on May 5 after the press deadline, and travel to North Kitsap on May 8. They finish the regular season at home May 14 against Bainbridge.

In their third and final home meet of the season, Sequim hosted Bainbridge and North Mason on April 30 with several personal records set.

In the 100 meters, senior Sean Southard set a personal best (11.52) in the 100 meters to take first with Westley French (12.19) and Adrian Osborne (12.27) also setting personal bests.

In the 100 meters hurdles, Stella Dennis placed second with a 17.78 run, her best so far.

Sequim is next set to compete at the Olympic League meet on May 8 at North Mason High School in Belfair.
