Football: Knights spoil Homecoming game

Bremerton’s rushing game spoiled Sequim’s Homecoming night on Oct. 3 with a 34-12 win over the Wolves.

Sequim’s Liam Wiker scored the Wolves’ two touchdowns with a 2-yard rush near the end of the first quarter, and another early in the fourth quarter.

The Knights opened with a 74-yard opening run by running back Kenneth Najera, and Sequim responded to tie it at six. They also recovered a Bremerton fumble less than a minute into the second quarter but couldn’t capitalize. Bremerton’s Marquise Allen then ran for a 12-yard touchdown and Najera rushed for a two-point conversion to go up 14-6. Allen then ran for a second touchdown for 42 yards to go up 21-6. The Wolves rallied and got down to the goal line with a combination of throws and rushes in tandem with face mask and offsides penalties on the Knights, but Sequim ran out of time before halftime.

In the second half, Allen caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Buda Sorensen with 6:03 to go in the third to help the Knights go up by three touchdowns (28-6).

Sequim drove the ball the remainder of the third quarter and started the fourth with a Wiker touchdown run to narrow it 28-12 with the Wolves’ extra point blocked.

An unsuccessful onside kick led to the final score of the game where Allen ran for another touchdown from 35 yards out with 9:03 to play. Allen and Najera combined for more than 180 yards rushing in the game.

Sequim (0-2, 3-2) is set to host North Kitsap (2-1, 3-2) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.

Volleyball splits matches

Sequim had to battle against two opponents in an Olympic League volleyball match Tuesday night, rival North Kitsap and a referee unwilling to make calls against the Vikings in a 25-11, 18-25, 25-15, 25-27, 10-15 five-set loss.

“The biggest part was I feel really bad for my girls,” said Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman. “We’ve been working really hard in practice and putting together a gameplan for NK, and the refs did not make even one ball-handling call on them in five games, and there were some pretty blatant violations.”

Ball handling violations include double contact, when the ball is hit twice in succession or the ball contacts different parts of the body at separate times, or when the ball is caught, thrown or carried.

“There was one play where an NK girl caught it then hit,” Webber Heilman said. “It was so obvious the crowd was calling it out, but no call was made. It got to the point I asked our captain to talk to the up official and ask them to watch the net.”

Webber Heilman said the Wolves continued to play hard. Rose Gibson led Sequim at the service line, going 19-for-19 with four aces, five perfect passes, eight kills and 14 digs.

Ashton Reichner also went 100 percent at the line, 11-of-11 with three aces. Freshman Jordyn Julmist played well offensively and defensively, going 6-of-7 with an ace, 15 kills and 15 digs.

Sequim (5-2, 6-3) went on to sweep Bremerton 3-0 on Oct. 2. This week, the Wolves are set to travel to Kingston on Tuesday, North Mason on Thursday, Oct. 9, and to the Capitol City Invite on Saturday, Oct. 11.
