Boys basketball fall in back-to-back games
The Sequim boys basketball team had a pair of losses over the weekend, including a league-matchup with Bainbridge on Dec. 12.
Bainbridge is expected to be one of the top teams in the Olympic League and in a tight, hard-fought game, the Spartans pulled away from the Wolves in the fourth quarter in a 67-56 win.
The Wolves were hurt by Bainbridge’s Ryan Rohrbacher, who hit seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points.
“We lost him in transition and he made us pay for it,” said Sequim coach Craig Brooks. “We had quite a few defensive lapses.”
Despite Rohrbacher’s heroics, the Wolves hung right with Bainbridge most of the game. Bainbridge was up just 44-42 after a Mason Rapelje drive and bucket got the Wolves to within one basket early in the fourth quarter. The Spartans closed out the game on a 23-14 run to keep the Wolves at bay.
Solomon Sheppard led the Wolves with 18 points, while Rapelje scored 17. Nolan Bacchus scored 12.
Brooks said Sequim is eager to play the Spartans again at their gym because they know they can hang with this team.
“We have to get better at a lot of things. We have a lot to work on defensively,” Brooks said.
Sequim also lost 69-50 Saturday in a non-league game against Sammamish. Sheppard led the team with 14 points, while Rapelje had 10 and Hunter Tennell, Austin Klimp and Andy Reynolds all scored eight.
Sequim (1-1, 2-2) was set to host Olympic on Dec. 16, travel to Lindbergh on Dec. 17, and host North Mason on Dec. 19 before winter break. The Wolves will participate in the GESA Winter Shootout in Wenatchee on Jan. 1-3 before returning to league action in Port Angeles on Jan. 6.
Bainbridge beats Wolves
The Sequim girls basketball squad suffered their first league defeat, losing to league-leading Bainbridge 54-31 on Dec. 12.
The Spartans got up big early, taking a 27-11 lead into the half, but the Wolves did better in the second half, but were never able to catch up.
“We struggled shooting the ball and rebounding. We also didn’t take good care of the ball,” said Sequim coach Joclin Julmist.
Gracie Chartraw led the Wolves with 19 points while Jordyn Julmist had seven points. Coach Julmist praised Hailey Wagner’s efforts.
“She worked hard and defended the post. She was a warrior today (and I’m) proud of the way she battled,” he said.
Sequim (2-1, 2-2) was scheduled to travel to Olympic on Dec. 16, and North Mason on Dec. 18 in a rescheduled match-up following a vehicle wreck on the Hood Canal Bridge that delayed the previous game. They’ll also host Neah Bay on Dec. 23 in a postponed match-up before going on holiday break too. Like the boys team, they’ll return to league games on Jan. 6 in Port Angeles.
