Sports Roundup: Sequim goes head-to-head with PA in Rainshadow rivalries

Sequim’s teams had several sports match ups with Port Angeles in rivalry games last week. Read a full recap of last week’s sports at the Gazette’s website.

Football: PA defense swarms Sequim

In Friday’s Rainshadow Rumble, the Riders dominated on both sides of the ball, never allowing Zeke Schmadeke and Liam Wiker to break free for any huge plays.

On offense, Port Angeles completely dominated the clock, consistently chewing up nice chunks of yardage with running backs Dylan Mann and Jude Wallace and repeatedly converting third and fourth downs. Port Angeles ran 72 plays to Sequim’s 40 and was 9-for-18 on converting third and fourth downs.

And it was Port Angeles on the field after the game celebrating a 27-14 win over its Olympic Peninsula rival. Dylan Mann scored all four touchdowns for the Riders, rushing 33 times for 142 yards. He also had two catches for 35 yards, including a crucial catch and run on a fourth down that helped seal the victory in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Carson Waddell finished 11-for-17 for 193 yards. Wallace had 95 yards receiving and 79 rushing as Port Angeles ran 61 offensive plays and gained 418 yards of offense.

The Riders marched down the field on their opening drive and a fourth-down pass to Easton Fisher in the end zone looked like it might have been a touchdown, but the referees ruled it was not a catch. Still, the Riders held the ball for 7½ minutes on that drive, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

On Sequim’s drive, the Wolves couldn’t move the ball, then fumbled the punt snap and punter Wiker nearly ran for the first down, but came up a yard short, giving the ball right back to the Riders deep in Sequim’s territory. Waddell again hit Wallace with a 17-yard pass and then Mann scored his first TD with a 14-yard scamper with 53 seconds left in the quarter.

Again, the Wolves went three-and-out, forcing a punt. The Riders drove down the field again, converting a fourth-and-five at Sequim’s 37 with an 18-yard Mann run. Wallace made an incredible catch literally lying on his back on the ground to gain 20 yards and give the Riders a first-and-goal. Mann capped off the drive with a two-yard run with 6:22 to play.

Eighteen minutes into the game Sequim had run just six offensive plays. Port Angeles held the ball for about 13 out of those 18 minutes.

Sequim wasn’t about to quit however, and got its offense going with quarterback Kaden Miller hitting Patrick Elias on a 16-yard TD pass with 2:34 to play to get Sequim right back in the game at 14-7 at halftime.

In the second half, the Riders’ Wallace forced a turnover when he tipped a Miller pass. Ian Smithson came up with the ball and made a good run back to set up Port Angeles in good field position. Mann converted a third-and-one with a 14-yard run, then pounded the ball into the end zone from one yard out to make it 20-7 with 5:12 left in the third.

Sequim again fought back. After fumbling the snap, Miller recovered and hit Adrian Aragon with a 21-yard pass, then followed up with a beautiful 32-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Hampton with 2:13 left. After a Frederick Wilhelm extra point, the Wolves were very much in the thick of the game at 20-14 with 2:13 left in the third.

Port Angeles responded when it had to.

On the Riders’ next drive, Mann had a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 27-14 with 7:54 left in the game.

Sequim had a last chance to rally in the final two minutes, but Port Angeles’ Lane Wilson came up with a pair of quarterback sacks to slow down the Wolves and Wallace ended Sequim’s last chance with an interception at midfield.

Sequim (0-1, 3-1) hosts Bremerton (1-0, 1-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.

Tennis: Three doubles teams win

Port Angeles just got past Sequim 4-3 in a tightly contested boys tennis match-up in Sequim on Sept. 22.

Sequim won three out of the four doubles matches, with all four matches going to tiebreakers in at least one set.

Sequim’s Mason Rapelje and Bjorn Henrickson beat Port Angeles’ Liam Miller and Jensen Wolfe 7-5, 6-3. Sebastian Buhrer and Ryan Stites of Sequim beat Port Angeles’ Alik Ross and Jacob Oberly 7-5, 6-4 and finally Tegan Kurtze and Josh Loucks of Sequim beat Brett Manson and Gagan Seera of Port Angeles 6-2, 7-5.

Results from matches against North Kitsap on Sept. 24 and in Bremerton on Sept. 25 were unavailable. This week, the Wolves were set to host Olympic on Sept. 29, Kingston on Sept. 30, and North Mason on Oct. 2.

Soccer girls have big win over Olympic

The Sequim girls soccer team (2-3, 2-4) had a big 6-1 win over Olympic on Sept. 23 but in the rivalry game in Port Angeles on Sept. 25, the Roughriders won 4-0.

Against the Trojans, Sasha Yada put the Wolves on the scoreboard early in the first half after she was set up by a great run from defender Brooklyn Schmidt. A few minutes later, Adalie Eastburn scored.

Ruby Moxley-Horgan extended the lead off an assist from Olive Bridge to start off the Wolves in the second half, and Eastburn earned her second goal in the 55th minute from a Lily Sparks setup. Raimey Brewer got on the board with help from Kiley Winter. Hailey Wagner closed things out after a brilliant ball played forward by Winter, said Sequim assistant coach Vianey Cadenas.

On Thursday at Peninsula College, Port Angeles broke open a tightly contested contest with a flurry of three goals in six minutes in the second half.

Sequim kept the game tight throughout the first half as both teams had some golden opportunities to score. Port Angeles’ Kennedy Rognlien and Sequim’s Lilli Anderson both made spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless over the first 27 minutes.

Moxley-Horgan was a force all night for the Wolves, pressuring the Riders’ defenders all over the field and getting off several good shots.

Cadanes said the Wolves made a couple of mistakes to allow the Riders open shots but said the team will learn.

“We’ll come out stronger,” she said.

Sequim was set to travel to North Kitsap on Tuesday, and host Bremerton on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Volleyball sweeps its week

Sequim (4-1, 5-2) swept Olympic in an Olympic League volleyball match on Sept. 23 with wins of 25-19, 25-19, 25-21.

Two days later, the Wolves did the same in Port Angeles going 25-19, 25-19, 25-15.

Against Olympic, Wolves coach Jennie Webber Heilman said Kassi Montero started the game with an ace, and Sequim scored the first six points with four aces.

“That kind of set the tone for the game,” she said. “We were serving pretty tough as a group. I’m pretty sure we hit our goal of having 90 percent serving, and we had 21 aces and only gave up eight, so that helps a lot.”

Kenzi Berglund led Sequim at the service line, going 17-for-17 with seven aces. Montero was 12-for-13 with seven aces, two kills and two digs, while Madi Salazar went 5-for-5 with a kill, a stuff block and two digs.

Sydney Clark went 5-for-6 with two aces, one kill and two digs.

Against Port Angeles, Sequim freshman Tegan Nethery posted a 10-point run with three aces in the first game and finished 12-of-12 with two kills and two stuff blocks.

Sophie Greenleaf led an eight-point run in game two, with two aces, and Montero also went 12-for-12 on serves with eight digs, six perfect passes and three kills.

Berglund was 14-of-16 with three aces, 15 assists, six kills and two digs.

Sequim was set to travel to league-leading North Kitsap on Tuesday, and then host Bremerton on Thursday, Oct. 2.
