Sequim’s track and field continued winning events while setting personal records in Bremerton for the West Central District 3 tournament last week.
Sophomore Clare Turella won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches, a season record for her, to qualify for the state 2A meet set to begin Thursday, May 29 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
Turella’s high jump was the fifth-best in the state and three inches off the top height.
She won state as a freshman last year with a 5-3 jump. Turella also set a personal record in the long jump with a ninth place leap of 15-7.
Sequim senior Dawn Hulstedt, who competed last year at state, qualified once again. She finished the 800-meters-race in 2 minutes, 18.81 seconds for a second place finish, and fourth in the 1600-meters (5:20.02). Hulstedt also set a personal record in the 400-meters finishing seventh (1:01.84).
The Sequim 4×200 girls relay team of Birdie Pyeatt, Kylie Peters, Hulstedt and Ruby Moxley-Horgan finished second with a time of 1:49.86 to also qualify for state.
For the boys, sophomore Reid Randall placed third with a personal record to qualify for state in the 400-meters (50.27). He also set a PR in the 800 meters to finish seventh (1:59.38).
Sequim’s Sean Southard also qualified for a return trip to state by finishing fourth in the javelin with a throw of 154-6, a season record.
The girls’ 4×100 relay (Pyeatt, Peters, Stella Dennis, Hailey Wagner) almost qualified for state finishing in fifth place (52.24). Dennis, a freshman, also finished ninth in the 100-meter-hurdles (17.90).
The boys’ 4×400 relay finished sixth (3:32.52) with Randall, Adrian Osborne, Westley French and Gavin Tupper.
Golf
Junior Adrian Aragon made the second day cut of the 2A state golf tournament at the Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis. He shot an 82 on May 20, and he shot an 88 on day two to finish tied for 36th (170) with Karson Dunlap of Pullman.
Wyatt Brownell of Burlington Edison won the 2A tournament shooting a 72 and 70 (142).
At the 2A girls tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Course, Sequim junior Raimey Brewer shot a 102, and teammate Chloe Tweter a 111 on May 20.
Jana Knapp of Mark Morris won the two-day girls tournament shooting 72 and 79 (151).
