There are times when leading a large community organization can feel like a daunting task, but, more often, the embrace of the community shows us we are all in this together and that many hands truly do make light work.
The past month proved the latter point many times over as Sequim Picklers held our two largest events: our annual meeting, tending to the business of the club, and the Sequim Fling, our annual summer pickleball tournament.
This year’s Sequim Fling attracted players from across the region. Teams of four competed for the Lavender Cup Championship along with the opportunity to earn qualifying points for entry into the Northwest Regional Championships and even the National Championships.
The level of competition was outstanding and only made possible by the generous support of our sponsors, our member volunteers, our team of referees, the local restaurants and food trucks that nourished the teams, and local musicians Christine Moon and The Grand Olympics Chorus who each performed the national anthem brilliantly.
We are humbled by the outpouring of support from the community and honored to play our role in bringing tourism to Sequim to support local businesses.
Our annual meeting paid homage to the birth of pickleball 60 years ago on Bainbridge Island with a fabulous ‘60’s theme – including authentic costumes, music, dancing, and more. Now the official state sport of Washington, pickleball serves as a vehicle to build bridges across generations, communities, and other divides.
The meeting also included updates to our club bylaws, a review of our finances, and nominations for new board members to ensure we are well positioned to serve the community for many years to come.
At the meeting we formally introduced our new Youth Program in partnership with the YMCA. We are excited to introduce this great sport to a new generation and are eager to begin classes next month. Contact the YMCA for registration details.
We also offer free beginner classes each Sunday at 3 p.m. at Carrie Blake Park if you’d like to come see what all the excitement is about. There is no registration required; simply come down to the pickleball courts at 3 and we’ll provide the balls, paddles, and instructors so that you can get a feel for the game.
