Third OAT run set for April 11

Olympic Adventure Trail Run is first in three-part running series

The Olympic Adventure Trail Run is set for April 11 — and that’s just the beginning.

Race organizers Scott Tucker and Lorrie Mittmann and Peninsula Adventure Sports set the annual OAT run as the first in the three-part, 2015 Peninsula Adventure Sports Series.

Following the OAT run is the Great Olympic Adventure Trail (GOAT) Run, a marathon and half marathon trail race, on Sept. 19, and the Big Hurt, a multi-sport race, on Sept. 26.

Now in its third year, the OAT Run returns to the single-track Adventure Route section of the Olympic Discovery Trail just west of Port Angeles. This 12k and half-marathon trail run sold out all 250 spots in its first two years.

This year is on track for another sell-out crowd of runners from across the United States and Canada, race organizers say.

The start lines of the one-way course are higher in elevation than the finish line, but the course challenges runners with more than 2,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain in the half marathon and 1,000-plus feet of gain in the 12k.

The course runs west to east on the trail and concludes with a barbecue and after-party at Harbinger Winery. For more information about the race, see www.oatrun.org.

There are still a few spots open for the race; register at www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=34812.

This year’s title sponsor is Family Medicine. Other sponsors include JS Ironworks, Air Flo Heating Company, Pepsi Peninsula Bottling, Greg Voyles Farmers Insurance Agency, First Federal, Olympic Distributing and its partners at Pike Brewing Company, Scuttlebutt Brewery and Finn River Farm Cidery. Also supporting the OAT Run are  Harbinger Winery, CrossFit ThunderRidge and Peninsula Trails Coalition.

The one-way course is possible through shuttle support from the YMCA, Sequim Boys & Girls Club, Port Angeles Senior Center, Next Door Gastropub and All Points Charter.

“Small races like this cannot take place without sponsors, so these are the folks really making OAT Run happen,” Mittmann said.

Fall races

The Great Olympic Adventure Trail Run, a marathon and half-marathon, also features a one-way course on the Adventure Route. The GOAT Run, however, travels east to west and finishes at the Log Cabin Resort on the shore of Lake Crescent.

The marathon course reaches a maximum elevation of 1,619 feet and a cumulative gain of 3,519 feet. Half-marathoners start at an elevation of 1,266 feet near the top of the Joyce Access Road and run a cumulative elevation gain of 1,528 feet. At 14 miles instead of the traditional 13.1, the half also gives runners a little extra time to enjoy the trail. See greatoatrun.org.

After a 10-year hiatus, Tucker and Mittmann — along with Family Medicine as the title sponsor — are resurrecting The Big Hurt, a multi-sport race that took place in Port Angeles from 1997-2004. Race legs include mountain biking, kayaking, road biking and a 10k (6.2-mile) run. Participants may go solo for all four legs in the Iron Division or they can form relay teams.
