And so the second season begins.
Sequim’s boys and girls track and field athletes kicked off the 2013 postseason with a pair of fifth-place finishes in the nine-team Olympic League meet on May 4 in Poulsbo.
Led by senior Jasmine McMullin, Sequim’s girls tallied up 77 team points to finish behind league champ North Kitsap (194), Kingston (108.3), North Mason (103) and Port Angeles (87.73), and well ahead of Port Townsend, Olympic, Bremerton and Klahowya.
McMullin was named the meet’s female Athlete of the Meet after she set a Sequim High School record in the triple jump of 36 feet, 4.5 inches — breaking the two-year-old school mark Haleigh Harrison set by a full 18 inches.
"Her last jump, she just nailed it," Sequim coach Brad Moore said.
McMullin also placed second in the long jump (16-4.75).
Sarah Hutchison bolstered Sequim’s effort, winning the pole vault (9 feet) and taking third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles.
Also placing fourth were Andria Bower in the shot put and Sarah Henry in the discus.
On the boys’ side, senior Jayson Brocklesby set a season-best in the high jump with a 6-4 effort, just one inch off of his own school mark. But North Kitsap junior Taylor Stephens beat him to the mark to edge Brocklesby for first place at the league meet. (Stephens has a 2A-best 6-6 mark this season.)
Moore said Brocklesby has the potential to reach 6-6 or 6-8 this season.
Brocklesby won the 400-meter race and aided the Wolves’ 4×100 team in their first-place run.
Sequim’s boys racked up 89 team points, fifth behind champ North Kitsap (144), Olympic (119), North Mason (101) and Kingston (100). Klahowya (50 points) was sixth, followed by Port Angeles, Bremerton and Port Townsend.
Fellow senior Lopaka Yasumura won the shot put with a 48-7.5 throw.
"He’s throwing pretty consistent (but he) still hasn’t mastered it yet," Moore said of Yasumura.
Mikey Cobb set a Sequim High sophomore record in the 1,600-meter race with a 4:37 mark, good for third place. The effort was Cobb’s personal best by more than 13 seconds.
Sequim’s Peter Ohnstad was fourth in the 3,200-meter race and SHS freshman Oscar Herrera placed in the top five in both hurdles events.
North Kitsap sophomore Zachary Whittaker was named male field Athlete of the Meet after winning the long jump and triple jump events.
Regan Coyler of North Kitsap set meet records in the 100 hurdles and 400-meter race to take female Runner of the Meet honors while fellow senior Craig Allen of North Mason was named male Runner of the Meet for taking top honors in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200-meter sprint.
Moving on
Sequim can advance athletes in up to 33 individual and relay events to the 2A sub-district meet, after earning top-eight finishes at the league meet.
The sub-district meet is slated for Saturday, May 11, at Bremerton High School.
The top six athletes in each event at sub-districts earn berths at the 2A district meet in Sumner May 17-18, and the top six from districts advance to the class 2A state meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, May 23-25.
"I think we’re in pretty good shape," Moore said.
"We don’t have a ton of kids that are going to go all the way to state," he said, but noted the ones that do have a chance to place high and possibly earn spots on the medal stand (top eight).
"At this point we’re trying to dial things in," he said.
