Track & Field: SHS boys sweep, girls split at league meet

A strong Sequim boys squad saw key athletes return from injuries in recent weeks and hurdle past a key league foe last week to improve the team’s season mark to an unblemished 6-0 league record.

Sequim’s boys got solid finishes both on the track and in the field to knock off host North Kitsap and North Mason on April 18.

SHS, led by dual wins by senior Murray Bingham, senior Riley Cowan and junior Darren Salazar, racked up 78 team points to out-pace NK (67 points). On the girls’ side, despite five first-place finishes by the Wolves, host North Kitsap topped Sequim in team scoring (100-45), with North Mason coming in third.

“A strong headwind kept the group from recording great times, but the competitive performances were very good,” Sequim coach Brad Moore said.

Bingham raced to wins in the 800 (2:02) and 1,600 (4:35), edging teammate Alec Shingleton in the 800 by about a second.

Salazar clipped the line in the 100 in 11.88 seconds, with teammates Logan Laxson (12.10) and Jarrett Allen (12.11) close behind. Salazar added a personal best 55.01 mark in the 400, just ahead of teammate Henry Hughes (55.70). Laxson added a win in the 200, with a season-best 24.14 mark.

Cowan continued his strong start to the season, placing first in the shot put with a personal best 44-7 and earning top honors in the javelin (155-7).

Fischer Jensen took first in the 300 hurdles (41.53) and took second in a strong field in the 110 hurdles, one that saw 2018 state competitor Andrew Blackmore place first, and Sequim teammate Riley Martin, another 2018 state 2A competitor in the event, place third.

Bingham, Laxson, Salazar and Shingleton teamed up to win the 4×400 relay in 3:34.72.

Back from injury, SHS senior Liam Byrne topped 12-6 — just six inches off his personal best — to take second behind North Kitsap senior Kaden Wilson.

Sequim’s Allen placed second in the triple jump (38-8), and Rigo Langston set a personal best in the javelin with a 134-8 mark, good for third.

On the girls’ side, freshman Riley Pyeatt continues to impress after nearly sweeping three sprints at the league meet last week. Pyeatt won the 100-meter dash in 13.78 seconds, the 400 meters in 1:00.74, and placed second in the 200 meters, just 0.32 of a second back of North Kitsap’s Madeline Pruden.

SHS senior pole vaulter Elizabeth Sweet looks to be healthy after posting a 9-6 mark in the pole vault, good for first place.

Teammate Abby Schroeder picked up two first-place finishes, winning the 300 hurdles (52.75) and the high jump (5-0).

Sequim’s Shayli Schuman set a personal best to win the 100 hurdles in 16.52 seconds.

Daisy Ryan took second in the triple jump with a 28-5 mark, a personal best; she was third in the long jump (13-6).

Olivia Hare placed second in the 100-meter dash, with a personal best mark of 14.86 seconds.

Sequim’s Hope Glasser was third in the javelin (95-3, a personal best) and fourth in the discus (74-11).

Competing at Eason

Several Sequim athletes competed at the 37-team NIKE Eason Invitational in Snohomish on April 20, with Jensen’s second-place finish in the 300 hurdles (41.33) the Wolves’ top individual finish.

Salazar ran to an 11th-place finish in the 200 meters (22.78).

Schroeder set a personal best in the 300 hurdles with a 12th-place 50.61 effort, while Schuman was 15th in the 100 hurdles (16.93).

Pyeatt placed 23rd in the 200 meters with a 26.98 mark, a personal best, and took 38th overall in the 100 meters (13.34).
