The season is early, but Sequim’s track and field squads look good off the blocks.
Sequim’s boys took top honors and the Wolves’ girls squad placed fourth at the 10-team Port Angeles Invitational on Saturday, March 22.
Mikey Cobb (1,500 meters), Oscar Herrera (300 hurdles) and Josh Cibene (tied, pole vault) paced a balanced boys attack with first- place wins while Alex Barry placed second in both triple jump and javelin events.
Sequim’s Jackson Oliver was second in the high jump with a leap of 5-10, second only to 2013 state 2A title runner-up Taylor Stephens of North Kitsap, who cleared 6 feet, 6 inches.
Sequim teammate Brendon Despain was second in the 3,000-meter race and Dylan Chatters was second in the 400.
In team scoring, Sequim’s boys scored 117 points to edge Olympic (110.5), while host Port Angeles placed a distant fifth (63.5).
On the girls’ side, North Kitsap scored 138.3 teams points to easily outpace Peninsula (100 points), Port Angeles (91.8) and Sequim (80).
Waverly Shreffler scored a first place for Sequim in the 400-meter race and joined Gretchen Happe, Hannah Hudson and Sarah Hutchison on the winning 4×400 relay squad.
Hutchison was second in the 100-meter hurdles and Emily Webb took second in the 3,000-meter race.
Sequim’s Wolves are home for their first Olympic League double-dual meet of the 2014 season, hosting Klahowya and Port Townsend today, March 26, with events beginning at 3:15 p.m.
The Wolves get a reprieve with spring break, then are back in action April 16 at Kingston to take on North Mason and the host Buccaneers.
