Track & Field: Strong start for Sequim tracksters at PA Invite

If their first meet is any indication, Sequim’s boys are going to be hard to catch on the track.

The Wolves took first place in all but two of the 11 events on the track Saturday as Sequim got off to a fast start to the season at the Port Angeles Invitational.

Junior Riley Martin, a state 2A meet qualifier in 2017, set a personal best in the 110 high hurdles with a 15.78 mark and added a win in the 300 hurdles (43.81).

Murray Bingham, also a junior who qualified for state last spring, won the 1,500-meter race in 4:17 and placed second in the 3,000 (10:05).

Sequim dominated the sprints and middle distances as well. Sophomore Darren Salazar took top honors in the 100 (11.81), a personal best, while teammate Logan Laxson, a freshman, bettered that time in the JV race with an 11.78 mark.

Silas Isenberger won the 200 in 23.71, a personal record, and Laxson won the JV 200 in 24.08.

In the 400-meter race, Sequim junior Trey Brouillard (56.19) edged North Kitsap’s David Blalock by 0.45 seconds for a personal best.

Alec Shingleton, another SHS junior qualifier for last year’s state meet, won the 800 in 2:08.38.

Sequim’s boys swept the relays as well, with Isenberger, Laxson, Salazar and Shingleton topping the field in the 4×100 (45.73), and Isenberger, Shingleton, Martin and Brouillard winning the 4×400 by nearly seven seconds (3:40).

Riley Cowan, another Sequim junior who earned a spot at state last year, won the javelin with a 163-foot throw. He added a fourth place finish in the shot put (35-8.25) and fifth in the high jump (5-4).

Laxson was third in the long jump (16-5) and Sequim sophomore Connor Forderer placed third in the pole vault with an 8-6 mark. Sequim teammate Noah White, a freshman, tied for first in the JV pole vault with a 9-0 effort.

On the girls’ side, junior Shayli Schuman and senior Elizabeth Sweet picked up Sequim’s first place efforts; Schuman had a 17.20 mark in the 100 hurdles and Sweet topped 9 feet in the pole vault. Sweet was second in the triple jump (30-1).

SHS senior Kiara Pierson took second in the 400-meter run (1:07.17) while Telicia Busby, also a senior, was third in both 100- (14.11) and 200-meter (30.71) sprints.
