Three Sequim High efforts at Mount Tahoma High School Thursday produced oddly similar results — all 10th place finishes — on the first day of the Washington State Track & Field Meet 2A meet.

Sequim sophomore C.J. Daniels took 10th in the 1,600-meter race with a finish of 4:25.74, missing the medal stand (top eight) by just 2.5 seconds. Scott Kopczynski, a senior from East Valley-Spokane, won the event in 4:15.96.

Fellow sophomore Oscar Herrera placed 10th in the preliminaries of the 110-meter high hurdles with a 15.90 finish, about three-tenths of a second from qualifying for the finals. The final heat is today (Friday, May 30).

Sequim’s girls 4×400 relay team — senior Hannah Hudson, sophomores Gretchen Happe and Waverly Shreffler, and freshman Mercedes Woods — also took 10th place in the preliminaries (4:12.62) on Thursday, missing the finals by about 3.25 seconds. North Kitsap edged their way into the final heat with the eighth-best preliminary time.

Wolves competing in finals today (May 30) at the state meet include senior Sarah Hutchison and junior Josh Cibene in the pole vault, sophomore Jackson Oliver in the high jump, and district champ Alex Barry, a junior, in the javelin.

Wolves in preliminaries include Daniels in the 800 meters, Herrera in the 300 hurdles, and Shreffler and Dylan Chatters in the 400 meters.
