Track & Field: Turella repeats as state 2A high jump champion

Seven compete for Sequim at Tacoma meet

Sophomore Clare Turella repeated as the 2A state high jump champion over the weekend with a personal best.

She leapt to 5-4 on May 30 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, two inches more than second place. Turella jumped 5-3 a week prior at the West Central District 3 meet in Bremerton, and improved on her 2A winning state jump (5-2) in 2024.

She was one of seven Wolves to compete at the state track and field meet over the weekend.

Senior Dawn Hulstedt finished sixth in the 800-meters (2:18.85) and 11th place in the 1,600-meters (5:15.71).

Earlier in the season, Hulstedt ran a personal record in the 800-meters on May 10 at the Olympic League Championships (2:16.62), and in the 1,600-meters on April 26 (5:13.21).

Hulstedt also ran with Birdie Pyeatt, Kylie Peters, and Ruby Moxley-Horgan in the 4×200-meter relay to finish 12th in the preliminaries (1:50.02).

The Sequim girls’ 4×100-meter relay (Pyeatt, Peters, Stella Dennis, Hailey Wagner) were alternates to state after placing fifth at districts (52.24). Dennis was also an alternate runner for the 4×200-meter relay team.

Hulstedt and Turella’s medals helped Sequim’s girls team finish 19th with 13 points. Sehome won with 83 points, while Port Angeles finished 20th. Teanna Clark of Port Angeles threw 136-3 in the javelin to win the 2A state title after placing third in 2024.

For Sequim’s boys, senior Sean Southard placed 10th in the javelin after throwing 153 feet. He threw his season best 154-6 the week prior at districts.

Cooper Henkle, a senior from West Valley in Spokane, threw 204-09 to win state.

Sequim sophomore Reid Randall ran 50.51 in the 400-meters to finish 10th in the preliminaries. He ran his personal best at districts on May 21 (50.27).

Anacortes’ boys won the team state title with 75 points.
