Track & Field: Wolves take eight firsts at second league meet

Sequim High track athletes earned eight first place finishes and 21 total top-three efforts in an Olympic league track meet dominated by host Bainbridge Island on March 27.

On the boys’ side, Sequim sophomore Andrew Brown swept the hurdles events — winning the 110 in 16.55 seconds and the 300 in 46.03 seconds. He also placed second in the high jump (5-8).

Mirek Skov set a personal best in the pole vault with a 13-6 effort, tied for the best mark among 2A boys (as of March 27). He also raced to a second place finish in the 100 meters, in 12.21 seconds, and placed second in the discus (103-9).

Sean Southard raced to a personal-best 2:14 in the 800 for first place, and took third in the javelin (119-0).

Mirek Skov raced to a second place finish in the 100 meters, in 12.21 seconds, and also placed second in the discus (103-9). Teammate Ayden Humphries took second in the 200, in 25.48 seconds.

Sequim’s 4×400 relay team (Brown, Skov, Southard and Humphries) took first, in 46.80 seconds, while SHS’s 4×400 relay team (Southard, Cayden Beauregard, Hunter Halverson and Ari Skov) was second (4:35.68).

Sequim’s Brody Anderson topped 10-6 in the pole vault for third place.

In the girls’ competition, Katie Morris won the 200 in 29 seconds flat and took third in the 100 (14.04). Teammate Dawn Hulstedt won the 1600 meter race in 6:21.

Kaitlyn Bloomenrader was second in the 800 (2:33.03). Krista Charters took second in the shot put (23-0) and third in the discus (60-3). Amara Brown was second in the high jump (4-4).

SHS’s girls 4×200 and 4×400 relays both won, with the 4×200 team (Bloomenrader, Morris, Emma Bergmann and Hi’ilei Robinson) clocking in at 2:01.33 and the 4×44 (Bloomenrader, Hulstedt, Aspen Goldner and Nikoline Updike) finishing in 4:47.27.

In team scoring, Bainbridge’s boys took top honors with 86 points; Sequim was second (48) and North Mason in third. Bainbridge’s girls won with 94.5 points, North Mason second (45) and Sequim third (34.5).

The Wolves are off for spring break, returning Thursday, April 13, for a league meet at Kingston against the Buccaneers and Port Angeles.
