Trojans end Sequim’s 6-game win streak

The Sequim baseball team’s six-game winning streak was snapped by Olympic on Friday, as the Wolves had their first off-day in weeks, committing six errors and allowing 16 hits in a 15-5 loss.

Despite the loss, the Wolves (6-7 in Olympic League play, 10-8 overall) still have a good shot to finish third among the 2A teams in the Olympic League if they can beat Olympic in a rematch and if Port Angeles can beat Kingston, which has the same record as Sequim.

In the loss to Olympic, Zeke Schmadeke had a big game with two doubles, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Bryant Laboy had a hit and two RBIs.

Schmadeke pitched three innings, allowing seven hits but only one earned run. He struck out two.

Wolves take two against North Mason

In Sequim’s first of an away-and-home with North Mason, Schmadeke did it all, throwing five shutout innings giving up just three hits and a walk while striking out five as the Wolves topped the Bulldogs 9-1 in Belfair on April 22.

Schmadeke paced the offense with a 4-for-5 day with two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases, bringing his team lead to 15.

Lincoln Bear had a monster day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two doubles and an RBI.

The Wolves also played error-free ball for all seven innings.

Leland Lopes spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run.

A day later in Sequim, Ethan Staples kept North Mason’s Bulldogs in check over six innings and the host Wolves hung on for a key 4-3 Olympic League win.

Staples tossed six innings of four-hit, two-walk ball and gave up two unearned runs, while striking out six.

The Wolves scored two in the second to knot the game and added runs in the third and sixth inning, and reliever Brayden White survived a Bulldog rally in the seventh for the save.

After a North Mason two-out RBI single to trim the Wolves’ lead to 4-3 and an intentional walk, White recorded the final out with a strikeout on a 3-2 count.

“This was a great gut-check for the guys,” Wolves coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “North Mason has some talented players and put a lot of pressure on us.”

Sequim took a 3-2 lead after three innings when Ayden Holland singled to left field and scored on White’s RBI double to center field.

Staples aided his own cause in the bottom of the sixth, leading off with a single, moving to second base on Devyn Dearinger’s single and third on a wild pitch before LaBoy’s sacrifice fly to right field.

Staples also scored Sequim’s first run, reaching on a leadoff single to center in the bottom of the second and later coming home on a two-out Logan Doyle RBI single.

Schmadeke’s RBI double brought home Doyle and tied the game up at 2-all.

White was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI, Staples went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

“I am pleased with how the team has rallied around each other and stayed the course after a rough start to the league season,” Ditlefsen said.

“We’ve made a few tweaks to our defensive alignment that seems to have helped shore up some of the defensive issue we were having early on.”

Looking ahead

Sequim was scheduled to host Olympic on April 29 and Kingston on April 30; results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are at league-leading North Kitsap on May 3.

The West Central Bi-District tournament is set for May 7-11 at various locations.
