Trojans upend Wolves 21-12

A slew of drive killing penalties and a spirited effort from a foe celebrating its final home game of the season spelled doom in Sequim’s 21-12 loss at Olympic on March 13.

Senior Trent Feistner muscled his way to 220 yards and two touchdowns as the Trojans leaned heavily on a running attack to post Olympic’s first win over Sequim since 2015.

“They were running harder, playing harder than we were,” Sequim head coach Erik Wiker said. “(We lost) because of attitude, lack of focus, lack of energy.”

Sequim quarterback Kobe Applegate tossed two second half touchdowns to fellow senior Garrett Hoesel, but Sequim missed on two other near scores, also from Applegate to Hoesel — one on an overthrown pass in the first quarter, the second a 55-yard screen pass touchdown negated by a penalty midway through the fourth quarter.

Sequim was flagged for 11 penalties for 100 yards overall, 65 of those yards coming in the second half.

Olympic opened the scoring in the first quarter, taking advantage of a botched Sequim field goal try with a five-play, 85-yard drive sparked by a 64-yard pass from Dylan Boschee-Perry to Kamanao Ruis — one of just two Trojan completions. Feistner capped the drive with a 15-yard scoring run.

The teams traded possessions via turnovers in the second quarter before Olympic put together another scoring drive, this one an 11-play, 74-yard drive that saw Ruis score from four yards out. The Trojans held a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Sequim got on the board on the Wolves’ first drive of the second half. Applegate found a streaking Hoesel from 25 yards out, closing the gap to 14-6.

Twice in the second half Sequim’s defense came up with turnovers — a forced fumble midway through the third quarter that stopped a long Trojan drive, the other an Isaiah Moore interception — but the Wolves came up empty both times thanks to penalties and stalled drives.

The Trojans took advantage of Sequim’s miscues in the fourth quarter — an illegal block that negated Hoesel’s long screen pass score — with a seven-play, 40-yard drive that Feistner capped with a 1-yard plunge and 21-6 lead with 4:24 remaining.

Sequim got their second and final score quickly, as Applegate moved the Wolves 80 yards in just three plays, the big strike a 54-yard pass to Jonas Welch. Applegate punctuated the drive by finding Hoesel from two yards out with 3:41 left; the failed two-point conversion left Olympic with a two-score advantage, and the Trojans were able to run out the clock.

Wiker found some positives in the game, saying he was pleased to see the underclassmen get some key playing time.

“The younger players played tough, stepped up where we needed them,” the Sequim coach said.
