Vasquez, Pirates snap losing streak

Even rain couldn’t spoil this victory.

Hugo Vasquez scored off a Steve Williams assist at the 25-minute mark while keeper Alec Risk and the Pirate defense kept Shoreline at bay for a 1-0 Peninsula win Saturday, snapping a two-game losing streak.

"Even though the rain restricted us a little, this ended up being a well-played game on our part," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said. "We moved the ball really good and had some great attacks."

Both teams had 10 shots on goal but most of Shoreline’s shots came from outside the 20-yard mark, Chapman noted.

The Pirates host Olympic at

4 p.m. on Sept. 24 and Skagit Valley at 2 p.m. on Sept. 27; both teams have 0-5-1 season records.

Bellevue finishes off Peninsula late

Bulldog Bryce Coffin scored three minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and Vinni Olivera capped the scoring at the 66-minute mark as host Bellevue topped Peninsula 3-1 in NWAACC West Division play Sept. 18.

Down 1-0, the Pirates got their lone goal at 34 minutes when Steve Williams found a streaking Omar Anderson for Anderson’s first goal of the season.

"We are giving up the same type of goal each game," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said. "Our players just need to tackle harder and not give up the easy stuff."

Titans top Pirates

Peninsula players won’t forget this name anytime soon: Danny Minniti.

The freshman midfielder from Wilson High School had his foot in on Tacoma’s first four goals as the Titans blanked Peninsula 5-0 on Sept. 16. Minniti opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the six-minute mark then, found Charis Amspacker for another at 19 minutes. Minniti added his second goal just before halftime, and then set up Frank Tayou for a score at 69 minutes.

Jeremy Penley added the fifth and final score.

Despite the goal difference, each team had 12 shots on goal.

"We were just unable to get it going to start the game and things just kept getting worse for us," Chapman said.
