Volleyball: Wolves best Bucs, Bulldogs in league matches

Sequim expected to play a grueling, five-set volleyball match, similar to a number of matches between the two evenly matched programs in recent years.

Instead, the Wolves came home with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 Olympic League sweep of the Buccaneers on Oct. 4.

“They kind of fell apart a little bit after the first game,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said of Kingston. “They opened the match with four points in a row to start it off, and it was like, ‘Oh, here we go again.’ But we traded the lead back and forth and used some good serving runs in the second and third sets.”

Jordan Kidd and Sydney Hegtvedt rattled off four-point runs in the second set while the Wolves put up five points in a row while Sydney Clark set the table in the third set.

“Sydney Clark was our serving machine,” Webber Heilman said. “She served 17 for 18 with two aces, 13 assists and three digs.”

Kendall Hastings also fared well, leading Sequim with 13 kills, while also serving 10 of 11 with two aces, six perfect passes, five stuff blocks and 10 digs.

“It was awesome to see our team come together and feed off each other’s positive energy,” Angel Wagner said.

Wagner had three kills, an ace, a stuff block and three digs.

Jolene Vaara had six kills, served 8 for 9 with an ace, seven assists a stuff block and 12 digs.

Wolves overcome serving woes

The Wolves (6-2 in Olympic League play, 6-3 overall) struggled on serves to keep North Mason’s Bulldogs around before pulling out the win 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-21 on Oct. 8.

Sequim committed 16 service errors in the win, falling short of the Sequim coach’s goal of 90 percent serving for a match.

“It’s a matter of going back there and being prepared to serve,” she said.

Hastings led Sequim at the net with 13, with six blocks and three aces.

Vaara added seven kills, 11 assists and five digs and Wagner added four kills. Arianna Stovall added three kills and two blocks while Clark put up four aces, two kills and 10 assists.

“They [North Mason’s Bulldogs] played really good defense,” Webber Heilman said.

“We were not communicating well on who should get it. We need to be smarter about our hits.”

The Wolves were scheduled to take on Ridgefield, Timberline and Capital at the Capital Tournament in Olympia on Oct. 8, and to host rival Port Angeles on Oct. 11 — results were not available at press time.
