Volleyball: Wolves fall to Buccaneers in five

So much for easing into the season.

Following a preseason jamboree that saw Sequim High’s varsity volleyball squad knock off rivals Port Angeles and Port Townsend on Sept. 5, the Wolves met their match two days later, falling 3-2 at Kingston.

Sequim (0-1), who got a team-high 15 kills from Tayler Breckenridge, rebounded twice from one-set deficits but fell 15-8 in the fifth and deciding set.

“We started very slow and were not passing in serve receive very well,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said. “(It) took us the whole game to get moving and playing better.”

Brittany Gale had 15 assists and freshman Kalli Wiker added 13 assists and a team-high five aces in the loss.

Wiker keyed a second game run with five consecutive points on serves, as Sequim scored the final four points in the set to take it, 25-22.

“The rest of the match was a battle, back and forth,” Webber Heilman said.

Kingston won the third game 25-22 while Sequim took the fourth, 25-21, setting up the tie-breaking fifth game.

“Kingston was in their best rotation near the end of the fifth game and pulled out the win,” Webber Heilman said.

Isabelle Dennis led the team with 13 digs to lead the defense; Breckenridge had nine.

Arlene Law had six kills and four blocks, while Gale and Lindsey Leader had four kills each.

Kingston won the junior varsity match 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-23) while Sequim won the C-team tilt, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22).

Sequim was scheduled to play at Olympic on Sept. 12. Sequim hosts Forks Sept. 14 and North Mason Sept. 19.
