Wagner hired to lead SHS girls varsity basketball

Sequim’s new varsity basketball coach is going to have a full plate next school year.

Sequim’s new varsity basketball coach is going to have a full plate next school year.

Justine Wagner, current Sequim High School boys and girls tennis coach, will take on varsity coaching duties next winter, too.

“Busy is good,” Wagner said.

She takes over for outgoing coach Evan Still after three years, who left for personal reasons.

Still led the Wolves to districts in 2014 and 2015 with a 1-2 record and 27-37 overall. The districts win was their first since 2007-2008. They also overcame a 17-game-losing streak that started in 2007 against Port Angeles on Jan. 9.

Wagner has served as the girls JV basketball coach for three years since she started teaching freshman health at the high school.

“I’ve always wanted to be a coach,” she said. “It’s one of the reasons I got into teaching. I knew I wanted to coach tennis and I wanted to coach swimming but (JV) basketball was open so I jumped on that and I really enjoyed it.”

Ditlefsen said he’s happy Wagner is moving onto the next level.

“She’s going to do great,” Ditlefsen said. “She’s very knowledgable, very organized and treats the kids really well.”

Still said before that he endorses Wagner 100 percent.

“She knows basketball and gets along really well with the kids and she’s well-respected in the school,” Still said.

Former Peninsula College assistant girls coach Danica Johnson will serve as girls junior varsity coach and Kathleen Kiele and Art Green will serve as assistants.

“We’ll have a fresh team this year with six seniors graduating and one girl moving away and not a lot of upperclassmen returners,” Wagner said.

This summer, she plans to take 10 players to a team camp at the end of June.

“The goal is to be the strongest and fastest team so we can get fast and easy points,” she said.

Wagner played on the Sequim High School varsity squad from 2003-2007.

She also starred on SHS tennis and swimming teams, winning a state title in the 100 breaststroke in 2006 and placing third in the singles bracket for Sequim High’s 2A champion 2007 tennis team.
