The Wilder Seniors defended their home turf at the 16th annual Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker Classic last weekend, sporting a 5-0 record.

The senior squad knocked off Wilder Juniors, Sandberg Baseball Club, Klahowya Baseball Club and Oak Harbor Legion in pool play, setting up a rematch with Oak Harbor Legion in the championship game on July 6. There, the Wilder team topped Oak Harbor 7-2 behind six strong innings from Sequim’s Tanner Rhodefer, who struck out five and gave up two runs in six innings.

The win gave Wilder Seniors its first Firecracker title since 2011.

Wilder’s junior team took fourth in the Firecracker Classic after falling 12-4 to Sandberg on Sunday.

The two Wilder squads battled on July 3, with the seniors taking the 5-1 decision. Sequim’s Nick Johnston held the junior squad in check on the mound, out-dueling former high school teammate Nigel Christian. Travis Paynter of Port Angeles had two RBIs to pace the Wilder Seniors.

Both teams are back in action Friday when the Senior Babe Ruth state tournament kicks off at Port Angeles’ Civic Field.
