Winter sports preview: Freshman Ellefson is Sequim’s boys swim team for 2021

This Sequim team has the highest coach-to-athlete ratio on record.

Sequim’s boys swim squad is a team of one — freshman Colby Ellefson — this season.

Coach Britt Hemphill, who led the Wolves to two wins in six meets last year and saw the Wolves place two relay teams and one swimmer (Kaleb Needoba, in two events) in the state meet, is back to instruct Ellefson for a “virtual” season.

Ellefson said he’ll train a couple of hours a week at the YMCA of Sequim four days a week, then compete alongside Port Angeles swimmers at the William Shore Memorial Pool on Fridays for a couple of hours at virtual league meets.

“I also do a little bit of weight training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a 1,000-meter cool down on Saturday,” Ellefson said.

While it’s his first year swimming at the high school level, Ellefson has a number of years swimming with the Port Angeles club team. He got in some training jut before his freshman year started, before getting busy with cross country and track seasons.

Now Ellefson has his sights set on learning different strokes and seeing if he can achieve some district-qualifying times, based on last season’s standards.

“I feel my best (event) is the 200, and probably the 500,” Ellefson said. “I’m better at distance events.”

“I only really swam each event once (so far) and I don’t know how much I can improve,” he said this week. “My goal is to improve as much as possible.”

Hemphill has a history with the Ellefson family, having coached Colby’s father Eric some years back.
