A bigger league, a bigger tournament and a bigger challenge.
That’s what the Wolves’ boys tennis quad faced last week at a 2A sub-district tournament in Lakewood, their first since reclassification dropped Olympic League foes Port Angeles, Olympic and North Kitsap into the 2A ranks.
The Wolves saw two singles players and one doubles pairing advance to the West Central District tourney, led by senior Mallory Maloney, who went 5-1 at sub-districts to finish third overall.
Teammate Waylon Lam lost just two matches – to North Kitsap’s Zach Fohn and Maloney – and advances to districts as the sixth seed.
Sequim’s top doubles partners Byron Boots and Michael Lee were 3-2 in Lakewood, advancing to the district tournament with the fifth seed.
Sequim doubles pair Evan Hill and David Richards just missed a chance to advance, going 2-3.
Overall, Sequim players went 14-10 at the sub-district tourney.
Up next for the Wolves, a long wait. Sequim’s and other league district qualifiers battle for state berths at district at the conclusion of the girls’ prep season in May.
