Wolves earn hardwood split with Klahowya

Boys lose heartbreaker, girls dominate in key league games

Sequim’s prep hoops teams played 54 miles from each other last Tuesday, but the results seemed worlds apart.

While the girls were in the midst of clobbering Klahowya by 40 points, the boys were locked in a fierce battle that could have given the Wolves a chance to edge closer to Klahowya’s grasp on third place among Olympic League 2A teams.

But Eagle Darrell Newman sank a three-pointer from the corner as time expired in Silverdale to give Klahowya’s boys a 67-64 win for its sixth league win.

The last-second shot spoiled 20-point, seven-rebound performances from Sequim’s Nic Thacker and Ary Webb. Webb sank four three-pointers and combined with Thacker to go 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

Sequim’s Mike Silliman scored 10 points and had three blocks while reserve Reed Omdall chipped in with three steals and four assists, but the Wolves couldn’t overcome a 22-10 Eagle run in the second quarter and 21 game turnovers.

Andre Moore led Klahowya with 26 points and four steals but it was his fifth and final assist to Newman that gave the Eagles the three-point win.

Sequim’s girls (4-6 in league, 5-9 overall) continued Klahowya’s miserable, winless season with a 76-35 drubbing in Sequim.
