Wolves overpower Riders, Eagles

That North Mason game? History.

Sequim’s volleyball squad shrugged off a season-opening loss to the Olympic League defending champs with resounding wins against Port Angeles and Klahowya last week.

On Sept. 15, the Wolves dropped the opening set, then reeled off set wins of 25-14, 25-7 and 25-17.

"We kind of got on a roll – we kind of needed it after North Mason," Sequim coach Jennie Webber said. "And it’s always nice to beat P.A."

Megan Zumbuhl had 10 kills while Caitlin Pallai And Maddy Zbaraschuk had eight each as the Wolves dominated the second and third sets. Sequim also racked up 23 aces, led by six from Teyloure Ring and five from Ashlee Bourns. Kari Hankins had 28 assists from the setter spot. Ring was 20-of-21 on serves; Bourns was 16-of-17.

"They gave us a pretty good game the first game," Webber said. "Once we got into our rhythm, the girls started serving better (and it) kind of threw them off."

Three days later, the Wolves had an even easier time with Klahowya’s Eagles, a team they’ve beaten 10 straight times and haven’t lost a set to since 2003.

Sequim led from the get-go and dropped the overwhelmed Eagles 25-11, 25-8 and 25-12. The Wolves racked up zero blocks – because most of the time, Klahowya players were sending free balls over.

Hankins was a perfect 17-of-17 on serves and had 23 assists while Megan Zumbuhl added a team-high seven kills and was perfect on her 11 serves. In fact, Sequim missed just two serves all game (64-of-66).

The Wolves have a big week on the schedule ahead of them: After a Sept. 23 match-up at Kingston (results were unavailable at press time), Sequim hosts Port Townsend Sept. 25, then travels to Longview for the Mark Morris Tournament this weekend.

That tourney features some of the top teams in Washington, including: 2007 state qualifiers Timberline (3A), Burlington-Edison, Mark Morris, Lynden, Mount Baker and Black Hills (2A); and 2B state champion La Conner; plus state 2A runner-up Tumwater, featuring former

Sequim star Alex Sele.
