Golf may be called an “individual” sport, but prep sports squads do take pride in winning as a team.
And a sweep of the Olympic League titles for Sequim in 2012? Twice as nice.
The Wolves’ boys and girls capped perfect league seasons last week with wins against Olympic and Klahowya, finishing the campaign with matching 8-0 league marks.
Sequim’s top players were slated to compete in the Olympic League tournament May 7 at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton — results were not available at press time. The top six boys earn an automatic berth to state while the next nine earn berths for the district tourney, scheduled for May 15 back at Gold Mountain. The top eight girls earn automatic state berths while the next 12 receive district tourney berths, also at Gold Mountain on May 15.
The 2A state tournaments are May 22-23 in Spanaway.
All-leaguers
Sequim’s Hailey Estes, Ryan O’Mera, Elisa Sallee and Casey Torres earned all-Olympic League honors last week. The quartet earned top-six averages in 2012 league matches. Port Angeles’ Joseph Barnes and Klahowya Fletcher earned league MVP honors.
Title, times two
Sequim’s girls (8-0 in league, 10-1 overall) locked up their second consecutive league title with a 29-shot victory against Klahowya on May 3, led by Sallee (52), Maddy Fisher (53) and Caitlin Stofferahn (55).
“The girls … got rained on the whole match,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said.
“It has been a fun season and we have a lot to look forward to in the future being such a young team,” he said. “We will miss our senior leader, Hailey Estes, but like I told her, there is a lot of golf left in the postseason.”
Sequim’s girls also earned a win May 1 at Bremerton. Vanessa Martinez shot a 52, her top mark this season by four shots.
On the boys’ side, O’Mera continued to post strong scores after finishing with an 81 for medalist honors in a sweep of Bremerton and Klahowya at Gold Mountain on May 1.
Brendon Hudson backed O’Mera’s finish with a round of 88, followed by Torres (94), Frank Catelli (96) and Anthony Pinza (96).
