For a team that’s rarely tested by conference foes, Peninsula’s Pirates sure got one last Wednesday.

Thanks to a pair of scores from a player who battled back from a major injury, the Pirates passed that test.

Kelsie Ng knocked home a pair of goals in the second half, helping P.C. overcome a one-score deficit to come away with a 3-2 win against Highline on Oct. 23.

The win clinched a Pirate playoff berth.

Ng, who rebounded from a leg injury for more than a year, tied the game at 2-2 with a tally at the 54-minute mark, then added an unassisted score 11 minutes later for the game-winner.

Peninsula’s Shelbi Vienna-Hallam opened the scoring at 10 minutes off a feed from conference-leading passer Bronte Fitzsimmons.

Highline answered at 24 minutes when Emily Hanna found the net.

The host Thunderbirds took the lead early in the second half when Kenna Friedman netted a score at 51 minutes, but Vienna-Hallam set up Ng just three minutes later to knot the game.

Emily Flinn had five saves in the net for Peninsula.

On Oct. 26, Peninsula clinched a West Division title after whitewashing the host Rangers, 2-0.

Mary Pierce set up Alexandra Rojas-Ayala for a score at the 56-minute mark and Rojas-Ayala reciprocated by feeding Pierce for an insurance goal five minutes later.

Kasie Lough needed to make just one save for the shutout.

Looking ahead

Peninsula closes out the regular season with home matches against Bellevue on Oct. 30 and Lower Columbia on Nov. 2.

The NWAACC playoffs begin Nov. 6. With a division title, Peninsula receives a first round bye and hosts a second round game on Nov. 9, with the winner advancing to the Final Four on Nov 16.

Peninsula will play the winner of the North No. 2 seed (Whatcom or Edmonds) versus South No. 3 seed (Clark or Lane) first-round game on Nov. 6.
